Who is Mariano Martos?

Mariano Martos is a Spanish bassist, composer, and educator who specializes in flamenco music. He started playing the guitar as a self-taught musician when he was 8 years old, and later switched to the electric bass. He has collaborated with many flamenco artists, such as Paco de Lucía, Vicente Amigo, Tomatito, Diego el Cigala, and Estrella Morente. He has also performed in prestigious venues and festivals around the world, such as the Royal Albert Hall, the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Lincoln Center.

Mariano Martos is also a pioneer in developing a flamenco bass method that combines traditional and modern techniques, as well as his own personal style. He published his first book, Flamenco Bass Method, in 2008, and his second book, Flamenco Bass Method 2, in 2011. These books are considered essential references for anyone who wants to master the flamenco bass.

What are the contents of the books?

The books are divided into six chapters, each of which corresponds to a different flamenco style, or palo. These are the Soleá, Guajira, Seguiriya, Alegrías, Fandango and Colombiana. Each chapter contains the following sections:

  • Rhythmic Section / Analysis and description: This section explains the relevant aspects of each palo, such as the basic pattern, the harmonic rhythm, the accents, and the ways of feeling the pulse.

  • Basic pattern: This section shows different developments of the basic pattern for each palo.

  • Complete rhythmic cycle or compás: This section presents a sample of the compás and traditional accompaniment with the most developed basic pattern.

  • Falseta: This section offers an original falseta (short musical phrase performed by the guitar) that combines basic compás with personal creation. It also includes an analysis of the form and content of the bass line.

  • Falseta solo: This section reproduces the same falseta from the previous section, but mixed and produced in the usual way, with the normal stereo panning of original music. The idea is to show how the music would sound in an edited recording.

The books use traditional music notation, along with chord diagrams and TAB for four string bass. However, there is no TAB in the falsetas. A CD is included with each book, containing all the recorded material in open panning so you can listen to:

  • The complete exercise in the middle track.

  • The bass solo with click on the right.

  • The exercise by itself (no bass) with the metronome on the left track.

In addition, the second book contains a complete transcription of Paco de Lucía's composition called Monasterio de Sal, which is a key piece in the history of flamenco bass.
